Devising

Southwestern has offered a devising class that has created amazing opportunities for Jessica to create freely and expressively.

From the original work that we had all been working on throughout the semester, our group of four composed a final piece. We used any aspect of the devising class we had learned and anything that had inspired us from the world we were living in. The idea that we were all passionate about was the feelings that burnout had all affected us with.

Burn Out

This project tested the ability to use greenscreen, homemade special effects and live performance.

This is a recreation of the chest bursting scene from Alien.

Staging

The Impossible

Ghost Unit: The Live Event is a devised hybrid theatre piece that brings together Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, with ghost hunting shows, immersive theatre, puppetry, and green screen technology. The group of students and professors are working to take this piece to the 2022 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh!

Ghost Unit

00:00 / 02:16

This assignment was a combination of everything we learned in the class. It consisted of an original script/concept, greenscreen, stop-motion, streaming & multiple theatres, voice-overs, DIY props and set (obviously), and more!

In a study of language and the devolving of it, we were asked to write an original script. We went through writing exercises that exposed ideas that we were curious/obsessed with and went from there.

We were able to have our scripts read in class by other students. These works influenced our remaining projects.

Good Boy

For the final project in a Feminism and Performance class, students were asked to pick an issue present at Southwestern and devise a piece of theatre to bring it to light. Jessica's group interviewed women in the department and created a montage of their experiments. It was powerful. This is a soundscape Jessica made using voice recordings of emails people in the department had received.
